The Ned Snead Memorial Scholarship Application

Edwin deSteiguer “Ned” Snead (1929-2015) graduated from Texas A&M University in 1951 with a degree in mechanical engineering. Over the course of his career he obtained 26 patents for inventions in the rail industry. He had three daughters, and although he tried very hard to get them to study engineering, at that time it was unusual for women to enter the field. Fortunately, that is changing and it has become commonplace for women to excel in engineering ands many other previously male-dominated fields. To continue this change and honor Ned’s memory, his descendants would like to award scholarships to promising female high school students who are interested in pursuing these courses of study.

An applicant must be a female high school senior who plans to study engineering, health science, pre-law, environmental science, or foreign language/international relations and who has been accepted and enrolled in an accredited college or university. She must have completed a related course of study at a Texas high school. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate some financial need.

Upon completion of the first year of college, recipients may re-apply for the scholarship for 3 subsequent years by submitting an official transcript showing a minimum course load of 12 hours of credit per semester in the selected major successfully completed and a GPA of at least 3.0 (of 4.0).

Please submit your application by May 1st to be considered. You will be notified by May 27th of your scholarship award status.
